About

André Rieu (born 1 October 1949 in Maastricht) is a Dutch violinist and conductor who founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987 and built it into one of the world's most commercially successful classical ensembles. Playing on a 1667 Stradivarius, he fills arenas normally reserved for rock acts and has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. His annual summer concerts on Maastricht's Vrijthof square - broadcast to cinemas globally - have become a fixture of the European cultural calendar.
