Like Hildegard von Bingen before them, Debussy and Mahler weave nature and spirituality into a transcendent sound world - in "La mer" and "Das Lied von der Erde" respectively. Debussy lets the waves breathe, Mahler lets the earth sing: both reach for life, change and the infinite. Debussy plays with symbols and subtle echoes of Asian music; Mahler fuses Chinese poetry with Western symphonic form. Hildegard's visions of creation and divine order resonate throughout - sound becomes the medium through which loneliness, longing and hope are heard all at once.
