Between breath and silence, farewell and transformation, a threshold opens - one that Hildegard von Bingen understood as a place of inner movement: not a rupture, but a passage. In "Tod und Verklärung" this passage takes shape as the final struggle of a searching life - painful, carried by hope and longing, toward the light. In the "Vier letzte Lieder", Strauss, shortly before his own death, looks back on his life beside his wife Pauline. Cycles are traced as if in time-lapse: seasons, times of day, a human life. Following Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" last week, this time Jüri Reinvere's "Das Lied von den zwei Erden": the piece reaches into the present and turns attention toward responsibility, renewal, and the possibility of a new beginning.
