Wagner's music tells of heroes and gods, guilt and redemption, of natural forces and inner struggles. It draws on two of Europe's oldest narrative traditions - Germanic mythology and the medieval mysticism of the Grail. In the "Ring of the Nibelung" in particular, Wagner reaches into the sagas of Norse and Germanic legend, shaping them into a vast musical epic. In monumental soundscapes he weaves together the human and the superhuman - from the powerful Rhine Journey to the sombre Funeral March. Alongside this, Wagner's music opens onto a quieter, more spiritual world: the symbolic language of the Christian Grail. Works such as "Lohengrin" and above all "Parsifal" enter a realm of purity, compassion and redemption, where guilt is overcome and healing becomes possible.
